is there a problem with the servers?

Things seem to be fishy: my emacs buffers and ssh shells froze,
traceroute to lcsweb52.lcs.mit.edu did not come back, and ping
pronounced lcsweb52 intermittently alive/dead.. Is anyone else
getting this? Having yet to see what will happen with the emacs
buffers, I can only hope that the files did not get damaged.

Recovering files

You might experience some delays and disconnections with the LCS network. Emacs creates backup files regularly, you should look for a file with #'s around the name. (type M-x DIRED to see listing of a directory). You can restore a file that was partially edited but not saved with M-x recover-file
