Mr. Greenspun,
I am a student at Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univerity and we have
been assigned the task of completing a "mock" flight to somewhere in
the U.S. My airplane of choice is a 1966 Cessna 172G Skyhawk with
only 570 hours since its last overhaul in 1992.
I've had some trouble finding costs for IFR inspections for just
such a plane as well as cost of data subscriptions for GPS, annuals,
insurance, etc.
What are some basic expendatures that I shouldn't leave out of the

The two-year IFR recertifications should cost less than $500, though most people don't notice these because they get folded into annual inspections. Data subscription for a single GPS is about $400/year (if it is IFR-certified; it not, you need never update). Annual for a Cessna might be $3000. Insurance should be $1000 per year.Don't forget to throw out that engine. Lycoming and Continental say that an engine is good only for 12 years, regardless of time. Yours is due for an overhaul.
