Flight 07; Introduction to Autorotations

Objective
The student will become proficient at controlling the glide phase of
an autorotation. The student will get an introduction to performing a
quick stop.
Elements
- any areas that were shown to be weak in recent evaluations
- quick stops
- autorotations from 3000' AGL to 500' AGL
Schedule
- 0-30 minutes: discussion of autorotation aerodynamics; explanation
of the link between quick stops and autorotations
- 30-60 minutes: drive to helicopter hangar and preflight inspection
- 30-40: startup
- 40-50: student air taxis to Taxiway Whiskey or Romeo for hover
practice
- 50-60: air taxi and quick stop at Hanscom (repeat)
- 60-70: depart to a suitable practice area
- 70-90: climb to 3000' AGL and then autorotate down to 500',
recovering by pulling up on the collective and returning to a climb
for a repeat
- 90-100: return to Hanscom
- 100-110: practice quick stops at Hanscom
- 110-120: put helicopter away
- 120-135: discussion
Completion Standards
The student should be able to enter an autorotation without
substantial changes to the aircraft's attitude or trim. The student
should be able to hold airspeed between 60 and 70 knots during the
glide and rotor RPM between 97 and 104 percent.
