Narcissism

the Philip Greenspun way

The World According to Me

Philip sitting at his Windows NT box (photo: Rob Silvers) A journalist from Il Mondo called me up. This is the Italian equivalent of Business Week, published by Rizzoli. Very authoritative. They were doing a New Year's story on the future and interviewing 7 experts. Would I agree to be the expert on computers and Internet?

"I guess so," I replied, "but wouldn't you really rather have Nicholas Negroponte? After all, he invented the Internet, CD-ROMs, multimedia, and, when you get right down to it, the computer."

"We tried to get Negroponte, but he refused to do it on such short notice."

Being a second (or fourth?) choice to Nicholas Negroponte swelled my head to such a fantastic degree that I created a new topic in my rdbms-backed discussion software: Ask Philip. This is where I'll keep prognostications and other bon mots that I draft from time to time.

Note: one good thing about the Il Mondo interview was that they hired Rob Silvers to take some pictures of me (they ran the two that you see on this page).

I am a 26 yr old woman, a narcisstic woman. I fall under many of these bahaviors, more then 5. What I find appalling is that on every website I go to, it makes us all of us look as though we are monsters. As though we wish and want to be this way. I disagree with what they say about no feeling, although I am narcisstic, I also love. I love my daughter and my son's with all my heart and yes, we do have hearts. We have been traumatized as children (not that, that is an exscuse) but i believe that there is hope - that I can have healthy relationships and a sucessful marriage. Please present this is a broader range of degree's of this disorder. I am sure there are people out there that will never come to terms with the disorder or that don't even realize they have it - but for people like myself....there is hope. Barbara Christensen
