My PhD thesis from the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, February 1999, consists of the following:

Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing
An overview introducing and contextualizing the work for an academic audience
A new Acknowledgments section, concentrating on the folks who were instrumental in getting me over the hurdles at MIT
the ArsDigita Server Architecture document as Appendix A

The result was a thesis titled "Architecture and Implementation of Online Communities", supervised by Patrick Winston, Tom Knight, and Gill Pratt.

During January 1999 when the thesis was due, I was engaged in a frenzied effort to finish a book on SQL and a set of problem sets for a brand-new MIT course: 6.171. Consequently, I would not have graduated had not Rebecca Frankel prepared the final work and navigated the MIT bureaucracy on my behalf. To her, I will always be grateful.
