The Alaska Highway gets scenic after Whitehorse, passing by enormous Kluane Lake and gorgeous roadside impromptu campsites (this one by the Donjek River) .

I was happy to make it back to the U.S. on July 4th to learn a lesson in international relations from the Kiwanis and look at the 900-mile swath of trees cut down to mark the border .

I never did figure out exactly what this sign meant, but I was happy to have arrived at Milepost 1422, the end of the Alaska Highway, without having whatever that was happen to me .

Fairbanks is pure ratshack architecture but it contains some wonderfully hospitable people .
