The culture implied a promise to young students in the sciences and engineering. The promise went something like this: "Work really hard, dedicate your life for, say, ten years to your science field, and you'll be able to make a contribution to mankind. You'll be able to build something, or contribute to scientific knowledge and have a comfortable existence. You won't get rich, but you will be comfortable." The culture broke that promise.
