This problems happen only if the "active desktop update" is active. I agree that installing the ADU is asking for trouble (a LOT of trouble as a matter of fact from my own experience). I also agree that since NT runs all explorer sessions (desktop, taskbar, NT explorer) in one process even without ADU installed, loosing one session means loosing all of them, or loosing the icons of the taskbar or hanging the machine and it all ends with a reboot.
