I should probably dredge up an impressive literary quotation here but I'm too lazy. Instead, here are some snapshots...

Venice built Santa Maria della Salute in thanksgiving for being spared the Plague of 1630. Each November 21st, people walk across a pontoon bridge, enter the church, and light candles. The 18th-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, now home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection of modern art.
