D.C.-based technocrats decide where to park the Afghan migrants

“For Afghan Refugees, a Choice Between Community and Opportunity” (NYT, 11/24/2021):

In resettling thousands of displaced Afghans, the Biden administration must weigh their need for support against the needs of the U.S. labor market.

That is the difficult question facing President Biden’s administration and the nation’s nonprofit resettlement organizations as they work to find places to live for the newly displaced Afghans. As of Nov. 19, more than 22,500 have been settled, including 3,500 in one week in October, and 42,500 more remain in temporary housing on eight military bases around the country, waiting for their new homes.

Initial agreements between the State Department and the resettlement agencies involved sending 5,255 to California, 4,481 to Texas, 1,800 to Oklahoma, 1,679 to Washington, 1,610 to Arizona, and hundreds more to almost every state. North Dakota will get at least 49 refugees. Mississippi and Alabama will get at least 10.

It seems as though the D.C.-based technocrats have decided that the Afghan migrants will not live in Montgomery County, Maryland, Fairfax County, Virginia, Northwest D.C.. or, indeed, anywhere within a two-day drive of Washington, D.C.

  1. Funny how they’re manely going to the most expensive state, Calif*. Been seeing a lot of them moving in lately to the nicest $3000 apartments in the complex. Hope they enjoy living in the 2nd largest economy instead of China.

  2. Here’s a 2017 article on Afghan regufees integrating into Western society:

    > I’ve Worked with Refugees for Decades. Europe’s Afghan Crime Wave Is Mind-Boggling … Afghans stand out among the refugees committing crimes … Most of the [sexual] assaults were being committed by refugees of one particular nationality: by Afghans.

  3. MSM is keeping this story buried insofar as possible. Note that there’s scant information after Sept 2021. However, at least 45,000 Afghan migrants had not yet been “re-settled” according to this November story https://thehill.com/policy/defense/581957-us-resettles-last-afghan-refugees-at-fort-lee

Angela Merkel didn’t welcome a single refugee — once the measles outbreak was gotten under control at Ramstein AFB, the refugees were flown to Dulles Airport. Merkel and other European leaders know all about the high rate of sexual assault by Afghans described in above account. Unclear what percentage of new arrivals had been vaccinated/were consenting to vaccination, but perhaps higher than vaccination rate of the 2M folks who’ve crossed the southern border since Jan 20, 2021. Just pray you’re not at the next supermarket which experiences jihad (see Boulder incident for reference).

  4. Well, finally the technocrats have come clean about the scale of the ongoing visa operation.
    (from 12/17/21 WSJ article)
If you hit paywall, “More than 60,000 Afghan interpreters and others who have applied for visas to seek shelter in the U.S. after working alongside AMericans forces still remain in Afghanistan, a State Department official said on Thursday. About 33,000 Afghans, including principal applicants and their families, have already cleared the more-onerous vetting requirements and could be eligible for immediate evacuation. This is the first time the State Department has provided a number on those left behind since the Afghanistan government collapsed this summer. … The State Department offical said that the remaining 29,000 visa applicants are in earlier stages of the application process. The figure doesn’t include their family members at this stage.” The most detailed example in the article is of Mustafa, 33 yo, who worked as a translator (for how many hours/days???). His brother-in-law is believed to have been killed in the bombing at the Kabul airport. Mustafa took on responsibility for his widowed sister and her SIX children. So 8 Afghans are to be granted immigration status on the basis of one applicant, under the rules in use. https://www.wsj.com/articles/more-than-60-000-interpreters-visa-applicants-remain-in-afghanistan-11639689706

    • Impressive population growth in Afghanistan from 2000 to present during the war for a democratic Afghanistan. The Afghans have been busy voting with fecundity and small scale military resistance.

      Clicking the wsj article,

“He took on responsibility for his sister and six children

      and

“We are jobless and the winter is coming. There is no food, or clear future,” he said in a telephone interview.
