{"id":22601,"date":"2019-03-07T13:03:34","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T18:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/?p=22601"},"modified":"2019-03-07T15:57:27","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T20:57:27","slug":"google-shows-that-james-damore-and-econ-101-were-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/07\/google-shows-that-james-damore-and-econ-101-were-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Google shows that James Damore and Econ 101 were right?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>James Damore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/07\/casting-out-the-heretic-at-google\/\">Google Heretic<\/a>, was cast out for saying that intelligent people who identify as &#8220;women&#8221; did not enjoy staring at a screen and typing out pages of boring C and Java code (while <a href=\"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/28\/if-programmers-are-anti-social-how-did-they-end-up-in-the-bustling-hives-of-silicon-valley\/\">simultaneously wearing headphones and rubbing elbows with other nerds<\/a>?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damore suggested that the programming job be reconfigured so that it would be more appealing to people identifying as women. Instead of doing that, Google fired him for his thoughtcrime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Damore were correct, Econ 101 would predict that women at Google would be getting paid more than men for doing the same job.
