He showed slides of various USAF trainers and the panel layouts are completely different from the latest and greatest civilian panels. Here&#8217;s the avionics suite that goes into a T6C &#8220;Texan II&#8221; trainer (i.e., a Swiss-designed Pilatus):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23962\" width=\"456\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1.png 1262w, https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1-292x300.png 292w, https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1-996x1024.png 996w, https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image-1-768x789.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The heads-up display is where the engineers expect the pilot to look. The switches just below the HUD are next in visual accessibility. The big TV screens that get pride of place in a modern civilian aircraft are relegated to a low &#8220;last resort&#8221; position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As impressive as the latest Garmin G3000-equipped jets are, could it be that the whole design philosophy is wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Related:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/mgfproducts.com\/pages\/hud\">MyGoFlight retrofit heads-up-display<\/a> (uses a BMW-style projector), which I tried at Oshkosh and it seems to work well. About $25,000 as a retrofit?
