{"id":27285,"date":"2020-06-07T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-07T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/?p=27285"},"modified":"2020-06-08T09:55:18","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T13:55:18","slug":"why-does-uber-charge-a-commission-on-rides-given-by-black-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philip.greenspun.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/07\/why-does-uber-charge-a-commission-on-rides-given-by-black-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Why does Uber charge a commission on rides given by black drivers?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/06\/05\/uber-eats-stops-charging-delivery-fees-to-black-owned-restaurants\/\">&#8220;Uber Eats stops charging delivery fees to black-owned restaurants&#8221;<\/a> (<em>New York Post<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In an email to customers late Thursday, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Uber Eats will promote black-owned restaurants on its app, and that the service will not charge delivery fees to those restaurants \u201cfor the remainder of the year.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cI wish that the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others weren\u2019t so violently cut short,\u201d the 51-year-old CEO wrote. \u201cI wish that institutional racism, and the police violence it gives rise to, didn\u2019t cause their deaths.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s ignore for a moment how it is just for a &#8220;black-owned restaurant&#8221; (would <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rachel_Dolezal\">Dolezal&#8217;s Pub<\/a> count?) to be spared Uber&#8217;s rapacious fees on December 31, 2020 and also just for a &#8220;black-owned restaurant&#8221; to be hit with those fees on January 1, 2021. (Maybe the problem of racial injustice will be completely solved by January 1?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is unjust to collect fees from &#8220;black&#8221; (in Uber&#8217;s judgment) restaurant owners, how can it be just for Uber drivers who identify as &#8220;black&#8221; to give up a massive slice of the revenue collected from customers as a fee to Uber? If Uber is measuring restaurant-owner skin color and not charging those it deems to be sufficiently &#8220;black,&#8221; why isn&#8217;t Uber doing the same with drivers?
