My parents spent a lot of time traveling around Europe with their Michelin Guides checking off every one-star church after admiring its fresco or altarpiece. Thus in my peregrinations around the 50 states, every Canadian province and territory including Nunavut, and the gringo highlights of Mexico, I have felt a genetic compulsion to visit art museums and sculpture parks. I believe that I have seen all of the major sculpture parks on our continent.<\/p>\n<p>The archetypical sculpture park is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Storm_King_Art_Center\">Storm King Art Center<\/a>, north of New York City. It is a beautiful landscape dotted with individually excellent works, which relate to each other oftentimes less than do the different holes of a miniature golf course (see <a href=\"\/blog\/2003\/05\/10\/should-every-golf-course-contain-a-mark-di-suvero\/\">my posting on the similarities between golf courses and sculpture parks like these<\/a>). Back in November 2013 I visited Edward Tufte&#8217;s Hogpen Hill Farms in Woodbury, Connecticut (<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/photos\/+PhilipGreenspun\/albums\/5951849152134093041\">my photos<\/a>\u00a0(taken while herding a 4-year-old); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardtufte.com\/bboard\/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0003uy\">better ones on Tufte&#8217;s site<\/a>). Tufte has spent nearly a decade now reshaping the landscape with backhoes, digging up boulders to create Stonehenge-like environments, and adding metal sculptures that are all unified by having come from one mind (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0201835959\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0201835959&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=pgreenspun-20\">The Mythical Man-Month<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=pgreenspun-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0201835959\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> for why this is important in software projects (short answer: even if three designers have more collective brainpower than one, the ultimate design will be more maintainable if it isn&#8217;t cluttered with ideas from three brains&#8230; terrible news for the open source community!)).<\/p>\n<p>Many of the individual works at Storm King are fantastic, but the overall experience is more interesting, thought-provoking, and awe-inspiring at Hogpen Hill Farms.
