One thing to consider when getting a road bike is wether or not to get sew-ups. When I got mine, a late 80's Atala, it had sew-ups and I thought I was the coolest guy in the world. It costs about $75 to buy and get a sew-up installed at a store. The weight you gain from clinchers is nothing. Unless you are a professional cyclist, you just don't need them. Sew-ups are for elitists or professionals with their own team behind them. Simply unnecessary for 99.9999% of the population. I write a lot about my difficulties on my blog, http://kurtandsandy.blogspot.com.
