The failures of the field
- you can't prove anything about Windows XP except that it costs $299 (no way to build correct systems)
-
bugs, bugs, bugs
-
no progress in software development techniques -- only way to improve productivity is to outsource to India (just like Brown; a 1951 Chevrolet was $1800 and Harvard/Yale tuition was about $500/year)
-
computer science curriculum unchanged since late 1970s (public key crypto was the last thing added)
Result is the recent collapse of interest in information systems. Organizations are proud of their obsolete IT systems. Consumers would rather have bigger SUVs than better information systems. Only the military is satisfied.
