Writing

I've tried to write about everything that I've learned that might be
useful or interesting to another person:
about life
- I spend most of my time sitting in front of a computer trying to
solve technical problems. The only times that I am able to step back
and think about more important issues are when I'm traveling.
Consequently, most of my writings about important issues are hidden
inside travelogues, currently housed at http://www.photo.net/travel/. The
most interesting work is probably Travels with
Samantha.
about computers
- Many areas of computer science are what Kuhn would have called
"pre-paradigmatic" science. People don't agree on enough fundamentals
for progress to be made via writing journal papers. Progress is made
with books. Consequently, I've tried to write as many books as possible
and they are available from http://philip.greenspun.com/books/.
Among these, the most entertaining techish book is Philip and Alex's
Guide to Web Publishing; the most useful for students is
Internet
Application Workbook.
about photography
- my attempts to teach people about photography are available at photo.net. The most interesting is a complete introductory photography
textbook.
about writing
- thoughts about worthwhile books
- thoughts about writing per se
- How the Web and the Weblog have changed Writing
about stuff
- /materialism, containing a popular
introduction to investments, a detailed account of buying a house, and
reviews of various cars
- /politics, various theories
- /school, thoughts on education
about myself
- I have prepared a separate index that
links to photos, videos, and writings about Philip Greenspun per se.
