• Quick Networking Theory Overview
• Nameservice: Sun likes NIS, we like DNS
  • What is NIS
  • What is DNS
  • Nameservice control files
• Adding users/group with AdminTool/command lines(demo)
• Adding packages with AdminTool(demo)
  • add ShowMe TV 1.2.1 from Supplemental
  • Need to cut and paste /cdrom/solaris7_suppcd/Product
  • Command line package tools: pkgadd, pkgrm, pkginfo

Lab TU1: Users and Packages

• Add youself with AdminTool, then delete
• Add yourself with 'adduser'
• Log out from root, then log in as yourself
• Run netscape as yourself, pull up http://philip.greenspun.com/teaching/bootcamp/week1/tuesday.html!
• su to root in a window
• Kill Sun's automount process, which is affecting /home!
  • do df /home to see how it is different than /usr
  • kill the automountd process (try 'pkill', it's new in Sol 7!)
  • umount /home
• Remove Solstice DiskSuite with admintool
• ReAdd Solstice DiskSuite with admintool. If you have problems with this, add ShowMe TV 1.2.1 from the Supplemental CD. You should use "/cdrom/solaris7_suppcd/Product" as the path in the admin tool and proceed to the next step.
• Remove Solstice DiskSuite with admintool again
• ReAdd Solstice DiskSuite without admintool (doubleclick installer)
• Read http://docs.sun.com package info How to Add Packages to a Standalone System

  This has shown us how to use the admintool and the graphical installer. After reading the sun docs, we can use "pkgrm" to remove the DiskSuite from the command line.

• ReAdd Solstice DiskSuite without 'installer' h (no GUI)

  The above listed objective is kind of tricky. I'm not trying to be. I'm tyring to figure out how to use the command line (which is the environment you will be in if you have to remotely configure a box) to add DiskSuite. If you click the "h" above, you'll see what I came up with to do it... but I would like some other opinions. I'm not sure of the best way to do this.

• Read Patch Guide
• showrev -p to look at your patches
• Pull down recommended patches from sunsolve1.sun.com and install them. This is how you'll do security updates.

  Apparently, there isn't a jumbo patch for Solaris 7 yet, so check out the Recommend patch list available at ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches/Solaris7.PatchReport. Down load and install:

  • 106793-01 SunOS 5.7: ufsdump and ufsrestore patch
  • 107038-01 SunOS 5.7: apropos/catman/man/whatis patch
