Flight Training Lesson 6
1.2 Hours Dual; Pre/Post Flight Discussion 1.0 Hours
by Philip Greenspun and Kasim Te; revised November 2008
Developed for students at East Coast Aero Club which operated under FAR Part 141 from July 2008 through July 2010.
Site Home : Flying : Helicopter 141 : CFII : One Item
Objective
This lesson introduces holding patterns from an instructional
perspective. The instructor will simulate a student and the CFII-H
candidate will simulate teaching various holding patterns, to include
non-published holds, non-standard turns, and the various facilities
utilized for holding. The lesson will conclude with the candidate
teaching one instrument approach.
Elements
Preflight Discussion
- Standard holding pattern (with and without wind)
- Holding instructions
- Standard entry procedures
- Time factors
- DME holding
- Expect further clearance time
- Required radio reports
- Radio communication failure
- Departing from a hold
- Using the GPS receiver appropriately
- Non-standard turns
- Published holds and non-published holds
- IFR intersection hold
- Various facilities utilized for holding (including navigation facilities not used in the Robinson R44 helicopter)
CFII-H Instructional Practice
- Teaching a hold at a VOR (or another navigation facility)
- Writing down ATC instructions
- Entry
- Station passage
- Standard rate turn
- Timing on the outbound leg
- Wind correction
- Teaching a hold on a VOR radial at a specified DME
- Teaching a hold at an IFR intersection (note the GPS sensitivity mode)
- Teaching one instrument approach
Schedule
- depart KBED and hold north of the LWM VOR at 2500' on the 360 radial
- hold north-east of the LWM VOR at 2500' on the 030 radial at 7 DME, left turns, 1.5 minute legs
- hold west of the EZKOW intersection, inbound course 090, right turns, 1-minute legs
- GPS 23 approach back to BED
Completion Standards
During hold entries, the CFII-H, demonstrate accurate CDI
interpretation and tracking, allowing no more than three-quarter-scale
deflection of the CDI, discuss the proper holding entry, and
successfully make a transition from the en-route segment to the
holding pattern. During the holding pattern, the candidate should
maintain an altitude of ±100 feet and airspeed of ±10
knots during tracking.
