Fun for Friday: Vacuum out your PC

My desktop machine came with Intel Active Monitor software (free but it only works with Intel-brand motherboards), which issues alerts when the system or CPU get too hot.  The machine is about 16 months old and the monitor software has been complaining vociferously lately about excessive heat.  My friend Doug and I opened up the case, vacuumed out the innards, using a little canned air as an extra incentive for the dust to depart the fan blades, and the machine is now running 30-40 degrees F cooler.

Who knew that desktop PCs required maintenance?

  1. I’ve often thought that my mysteriously missing socks have somehow ended up in my mac tower so I open it from time to time to look only to find a lot of dust and hair from my flemish giant rabbit who likes to lie next to it when it is cold. There is something satisfying about vacuuming it out.

FYI: the link on this entry’s title is taking me to the intel page rather than your blog. Made it a little confusing trying to get here from my news reader.

  2. Fun for Friday: Toss out your PC and buy a MAC!

-Little Pisher. That’s my new jewish gangsta name! (see previous post)

  3. I once worked with a sysadmin who had an Intel server that kept shutting itself off from overheating. It was probably due to dust, too. The server was in a dingy little carpeted room that hadn’t been vacuumed since the 80’s.

  4. I have been vacuuming my desktop every 6 months or so. Have not dared to venture on my laptop though. Every time I opened the case, I am surprised at how much dust has settled. These machines are really like air filters …

  5. haha, same thing happened to me, except i didnt listen to the active monitor. i waited until the computer started making loud grumbling noises before i actually cleaned off the fan. 🙂
