  1. Happy Birthday Mr. Greenspun. I recently finished reading your book, Philip’s and Alex’s Guide to Web Publishing, and wanted to let you know that it is a great technical book and fun to read. I hope you write more books and articles in the future as I value your technical expertise and sharp humor.

  2. Counting in hexadecimal is more fun but really effective only for 10 years out of every 16. I turned 0x34 last June, for instance.

  3. Happy Birthday. I have found both the non-prime (40) and newly-prime (41) years to be quite enjoyable. I wish you the same.

  4. Happy Birthday, Phil!

Thank you for using your knowledge for following and sharing your passions and creativity – and making a difference for millions of people. I am inspired by the way you live your life.

I moved to the states 5 years ago and had the chance to be in your ArsDigita Bootcamp in Cambridge. I learned many of the skills I use daily from that class and from your online and dead-tree writings. I have found a great community at photo.net, also started by you.

Your actions are examples of generosity and trust in the goodwill of others.

    Thank you.

  5. Happy Birthday, Philip!

And thanks for everything (photo.net, this blog, etc.) through the years. I hit that milepost myself on 9/11. 40 is certainly a lot better than 38 was.

  6. Recently saw an episode of the Simpsons you’d appreciate as you fight the battle of the bulge: Homer walks into a fat-man’s clothing outlet called “The Vast Waistband,” and when the store manager gets a look at how fat he is, he asks “let me guess, computer programmer? Computer magazine columnist? Something to do with computers?” Happy birthday. What better place to celebrate #40 than with your closest friend on your own blog…

  7. Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. I had a nice 40th. Richard and Kyle organized a party complete with pinata (about 40 people showed up, ranging in age from 1 to 70). There was the obligatory next-day German chocolate cake leftover party at my apartment. Today was a flying day, practicing the Commercial maneuvers, soft-field landings, and coping with engine failures, up and down the coastline to Ogunquit, Maine, 700′ over the breakers. Tomorrow: class at MIT mid-day, more birthday flying, but this time in a rented airplane with retractable landing gear (10 hours are required for a Commercial certificate), then a play at the American Rep. Theater.

  8. Philip, your resume says that you have had the same email address since 1976 philg@mit! Thats 27 years, did you enter MIT at 13 years old?

  9. Belated Happy Birthday!

As my partner Pamba told me earlier this year…

“You’re no longer forty. Now you’re in your forties…”
