Worldwide equivalent of Microsoft Streets and Trips?

In traveling around the US and Canada Microsoft Streets and Trips has been very useful (the program is kind of a copy of DeLorme’s Street Atlas).  You can type in an address or find a museum and then ask “show me the airports within a 20-mile radius”.   It seems to have all the general aviation airports in the U.S. at least.  Sadly, however, this program runs out of data when you get beyond North America (and coverage of Mexico is thin).  Does anyone know of similar software that covers Europe?  Central and South America?  Asia?

  1. well I guess Streets and Trips is “derived” from MS Map Point, which is available in Europe and works as you describe.

  2. Software I don’t know about, but you could try http://www.multimap.com/, which does a decent job in the UK at least. (Amusingly, the Multimap people have a patent on, roughly, “drawing a map and then drawing a symbol on top of it”, which may explain the lack of decent competitors.)

  3. The best coverage I’ve found is Maporama http://www.maporama.com/share/ . I’ve used it to plan journeys from London to both France and Italy. And I’m currently in Australia on business and it has found every address I’ve needed. The dropdown menu of countries seems to promise coverage just about everywhere, but I haven’t tested the more obscure places.

  4. Though Maporam does a decent job if you want to look at a high level map of India, it will not be able to give you driving instructions etc. I am sure this is the case for a lot of Asia. Most Map applications currently cover NA, Europe etc. So I would recommend that you get yourself a local guide/friend if you are going to roam around in Asia or Africa.

  5. We’re actively working towards adding more countries; the main problem is getting reliable road network data in a format that doesn’t require thousands of hours of bug-prone hand work to incorporate. –A. Nonny Mouse, MapPoint Employee

  6. Wake Forest University ( http://www.wfu.edu ) sent a class to Europe with PocketPCs last summer and used the TomTom city maps with a great deal of success: http://www.tomtom.com/

They are pretty expensive but cover most western europe. Here are the coverage areas:

Looks like they support PocketPC only. Handango has some individual maps for sale that are not available on the TomTom site.

  7. I have Streets and Trips and contacted MS for getting the files to extend it to Europe for a trip there. It seems like they could sell upgrade data at a reasonable price for other regions of the world. The answer from Microsoft was that we don’t do it that way, but you can buy another program in the UK or Europe at the full price. Instead I got a used copy on Ebay for a small fraction of the euro cost.

Comment to A. Nonny Mouse: Suggest to the powers that be there that they might make more money by being more customer friendly. I might have been interested in South American data earlier this year.

  8. Hello !
For my travels in the USA., I use the Microsoft Streets and Trips software that is useful for planning their journeys.
But this software only covers USA +Canada +Mexico.

I am considering a trip to Australia and I would like to buy the same type of software but it will cover Australia.
Maybe Is there a specific microsoft Streets and Trips for Australia?

    Thanks for your help !

  9. yeah, there isn’t anything for Australia. Even now a year later microsoft still refuses to acknowledge us. There is no other decent software for Australia, we are stuck with requiring to be online, buy hard maps or gps units… No software for pc. 🙁

  10. I’m looking for mapping software for Asia. Particularly East, South and Southeast Asia. Any recommendations? I would like to be able to plot routs by car (roads), boats (lakes and rivers) and by airplanes.
