I’m planning a trip to Kona, Hawaii, for some helicopter training with Mauna Loa Helicopters from January 12 through January 26 or 27. It would be nice to find a small house to rent out there that (1) is not too far from the airport, (2) has an ocean view, (3) has a lot of windows and light coming in from multiple sides (i.e., not the hotel room-style of all the light coming from a big window on one side of one room), (4) has high-speed Internet access already set up.
If anyone has any leads or tips for finding such a house, or helicopter sightseeing ideas for the Big Island, please let me know via email to philg@mit.edu.
Thanks!

Be aware that traffic south from the airport to town gets really bad from 4-5 in the afternoon.
Thanks, Larry. Done. I am hoping to find a place that is a little bit north of the airport, if anything. Truly get away from it all!
Philip, if you’re going to rent a car (which on the Big Island is sort of a must) I highly recommend the local Harpers Hawaii because they let you drive the Saddle Road (which cuts West-East across the island and is a great road if poorly maintained.) The major rental companies explicitly do not allow their cars on the Saddle Road.
Also, if you’re going to be there for a while (and you’ve rented from Harpers), plan one night to go stargazing at the Onizuka Visitor’s Center, which is part-way up Mauna Kea. They have free stargazing most nights and if you’re close to a new moon, it’s the clearest place on the planet earth to view the night sky, so it’s tremendously beautiful. However, it is January, and it will be bitter cold up there at 9000 feet, so dress warm and bring a thermos of hot fluids. The visitor’s center has hot chocolate for 50 cents if need be.
As to a place North of the airport, there wasn’t much there (North) when I was last there a few years ago.
I’m jealous- the Big Island is my favorite! Safe travels and hit Hapuna Beach for me too 🙂
Sorry Philip!
