Animals seen so far in Hawaii

After two full days in Hawaii, here is a list of animals observed:  Whales (from the helicopter and the shore), Reef Sharks hanging out in a breeding harbor (from the helicopter), sea turtles (on the beach at an expensive resort hotel and while snorkeling at a public beach), pod of 20-30 Spinner Dolphins (Kealakakua Bay, from the helicopter), triggerfish, parrotfish, butterfly fish, angel fish, small iridescent jellyfish, fish fish (all in the one snorkeling excursion), billy goat (roadside), cats, dogs, and Beta in a bowl (at Mauna Loa Helicopters).  Weather is just about perfect, as you’d expect.

  1. I saw some geese yesterday. They were out walking around on the frozen river. I won’t go into the details, Philip, lest I make you jealous. 😉 😉

  2. Turkey, chameleons, lots of strange bugs, fighting cocks(they crow all night long) mongooses were the animals we did not expect to see or hear.
Our experience was that the big island was noisy. If the fighting cocks did not wake you at night then the constuction equipment would provide a constant clank clank during the day.
The man-o-war were interesting to meet in the ocean also. They took away some of the fun of snorkling the reefs.
Lucky you for the helicopter views.

  3. Moongoose can be seen any time of day. Go on some of the side roads up above Holualoa and on the roads up toward the Parker Ranch. They’re all around. So are chickens. If you go to the Volcano Natonal Park, you can see the NeNe geese.

Take a night dive trip to the shallows off Kailua-Kona where the giant mantas feed (they draw plankton for them with floods they place on the bottom which is only 20-25 ft). You can see them just as well snorkeling at the surface.

  4. Helicopters and sharks do not mix! For reference, see Jaws 2, Deep Blue Sea, or Batman, 1967. At least carry some shark repellent batspray…

  10. I don’t see whales and sharks, but I see a piggy, chicken and a lot of bugs. I missed one of wild horse. I am danceing with wolfs now.
