Yesterday morning I decided it wasn’t worth showering or shaving before walking out the door for breakfast in Harvard Square with my friend Doug. The weather was so gloomy, who would be likely to see us anyway? Around 10:00 am, we arrived in the non-square Square and were accosted by a local CBS TV news crew. I hadn’t shaved for two or three days. Alex was looking a bit soggy in the drizzle. They stuck the camera in my face and asked what I thought about the City of Cambridge City Council voting, the night before, to make Cambridge a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. I responded that I wasn’t sure where these folks were going to live, given that none of my friends with jobs can afford to live in Cambridge anymore. The City of Cambridge does have a subsidized housing program (anyone earning less than $75,000 is entitled to a taxpayer subsidy), but these houses require a lot of patience and paperwork to get into. So… we are a declared sanctuary for illegal aliens, as long as they have $1.5 million to buy a house.

Of course the privileged, highly-educated elites of Cambridge would support such a thing. Aliens who don’t speak English are not competing with highly-educated white people in Cambridge; they’re usually competing with blacks and socially / educationally disadvantaged white people, especially those who live near the border and depend on public schools to educate their children.
Dan Baum wrote in Rolling Stone about illegal sheetrock hangers in California forming “a kind of cheerful volunteer chain gang….They work 12-14 hours a day, six and seven days a week.” They earned $11 an hour, well above minimum wage, but 1/3 of the union scale.
Obviously, privileged white elites in $1.5 million houses realize that illegal aliens will do their roofing, carpentry, and sheetrock cheap, and provide a nice source of non-black domestic servants…other than preventing native-born US citizens with anything less than a masters’ degree from supporting themselves, especially blacks, who typically have less education, and overwhelming the public-schools with poorly-prepared students who don’t speak English, destroying what little chance middle-class and below kids had to get an education, what’s not to like?
Booker T. Washington (addressing the 1895 Atlanta Exposition):
“To those of the white race who look to the incoming of those of foreign birth and strange tongue and habits for the prosperity of the South, were I permitted I would repeat what I say to my own race, ‘Cast down your bucket where you are.’ Cast it down among the eight millions of Negroes whose habits you know, whose fidelity and love you have tested in days when to have proved treacherous meant the ruin of your firesides.”
[of course, the rapid industrialization and expanding frontier made the immigration work out better than it is today]
Cesar Chavez (testifying before Congress in 1979):
… when the farm workers strike and their strike is successful, the employers go to Mexico and have unlimited, unrestricted use of illegal alien strikebreakers to break the strike. And, for over 30 years, the Immigration and Naturalization Service has looked the other way and assisted in the strikebreaking. I do not remember one single instance in 30 years where the Immigration service has removed strikebreakers. … The employers use professional smugglers to recruit and transport human contraband across the Mexican border for the specific act of strikebreaking…
Largely due to illegal immigration, stoop laborer wages declined, in real terms, by 55% between 1985 and 1995.
Wow. Well put.
The upper class benefit the most from illegal immigrants. It is the rest of society that pays for the burden they place on our society. Gasp, how horrible it would be to have to pay a housekeeper $15 per hour instead of $8. Or a gardener, etc. And yes, the middle class children really get cheated out of a decent education.
Although, part of the problem is the trade unions do little to make the trades accessible to recent high school graduates.

I guess you guys are looking to attract a different class of illegal alien (think Russian mafia, not Mexican farmworker). 😉
You’d be surprised how many of these high-net-worth illegal aliens there are in the States. Most of them own their own companies. I don’t know how it is now, but back when I was an illegal (1990s) it used to be common among my circle of illegal acquaintances to form their own companies and work as consultants through them, while “delaying” the employment eligibility checks they would otherwise be subject to as employees. This also had the benefit that they could assign themselves and their spouse an optimally low income for tax purposes, and keep the rest of the money in the businesses’ account to avoid paying income tax on it. Then after a while they’d usually transfer the money from the business account to off-shore personal accounts (hey, if you’re in the country illegally anyway, what’s so bad about a little tax mitigation?).
Elena Letones and Centro Presente will now have more illegal alien “clients” to serve and to use as statistics to back up grants for more public and private funds to run her little “La Raza” affiliate in Cambridge. I guess Elena needs job security and more illegal alien clients to serve. What the heck is she complaining about? She doesn’t like illegal aliens coming up from New Jersey? She only wants those that already have invaded Cambridge? Hey, Elena Letones and the Cambridge City Council now have to walk the walk. Too funny.
