Samantha Power and the Monster

Samantha Power, a professor at Harvard’s professional school for government bureaucrats, has been in the news recently for having called Hillary Clinton “a monster”. The imbroglio forced her to resign from Barack Obama’s campaign. I was a bit saddened by my neighbor’s fall from grace because (1) “monster” would be a fair characterization of nearly any national politician, and (2) Samantha Power has written some interesting articles, such as this New Yorker piece on a UN bureaucrat who died in Iraq.

  1. I heard a great interview of her on the BBC recorded shortly before she made the “monster” comment to the Scot reporter but broadcast shortly after the comment hit the news (at least it was “after” when I heard the interview by Owen Bennett-Jones at around 4:00 a.m. on 03.08.2008 on Minnesota Public Radio, which broadcasts BBC all night long). She’s an extraordinarily articulate person. I could only say “Wow!” after listening to her. Barak Obama showed good taste/judgment in contacting her out of the blue after reading her Pulitizer Prize-winning book. And you’re right — the “monster” comment is small potatoes. If Barack wins, she’ll be one of his top aides, you can count on it. Here’s a link to a downloadable audio recording of the interview:

  2. I would like to express my support for Samantha Power. She made a mistake. I’m sure she realizes now that the Yankees are better than the Red Sox.

LOL! – No really – It was an honest mistake. I think her losing her position is very much “over the top.” As everyone knows, her potential is enormous and I certainly wish her the best.
Now when is that NEXT book coming out!? lol!
