Hard times for yuppies, but maybe a silver lining

I’m throwing a little wine and cheese party tomorrow night so I stopped by Formaggio in West Cambridge for the first time in a couple of months. Prices had gone up 25 percent on almost everything. Imported cheeses are now $25-35/lb. Domestic cheese is $20-25/lb. A tuna sandwich has gone up 25 percent as well. Perhaps this is the solution to the obesity problem.

  1. Not only food… Yesterday, I stopped by Bailey Banks and Biddle, from where I had purchased Omega Speedmaster watch 3-4 years ago for $2,000. Exactly the same watch is going for $2,800 now.

  2. Philip don’t despair. Don’t you know that high prices of food and gasoline have no effect on inflation? Not according to the CPI anyway. Just think of the money you are saving by buying less food. No more expensive gym memberships!
Just add additional notches in belts and cinch all now too big clothes tighter.

  3. Absolutely agree with Paul. Cheetos have not gone up in price in percentage terms nearly as much as dairy, fresh produce, whole grain items, etc., in the past year or so.
The price of gas has finally affected people’s behavior. They are using public transportation, bicycling and walking more (and walking to access public transportation and walking, period, has always meant that urban dwellers have a lower incidence of obesity than suburbanites and rural dwellers). If only our infrastructure were built with the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians in mind. Sadly not the case — we could learn a lot from the Europeans.

Also, the markup at Formaggio must be 200%, easily — go to Trader Joe’s for $12.99/pound Parmesan Reggiano, bargain Brie, etc.. Or the North End, perhaps.

  4. Do you have any idea what I paid for a single grass-fed aged rib eye in Berkeley the other day? $30! And it was barely aged.

It’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New Yuppie town.

  5. As long as people have enough money for their lottery tickets, you could triple the price of food and obesity would not go away!
