  1. Darin: I’m impressed that the Icon guys have gotten so much publicity, glamour, etc. They also seem to have a strong team of people. As a guy with a seaplane rating, however, I am leery of the idea of suggesting to low-time pilots that they fly a seaplane, much less an amphibious aircraft. The structure of airports is what keeps a lot of inexperienced pilots safe. With a seaplane, it is up to the pilot to determine whether obstacle clearance and runway length are adequate. It is up to the pilot to determine wind direction. It is up to the pilot to determine whether or not there are submerged logs in the water. These tasks can be beyond the capabilities of very experienced pilots, which is why insurance for seaplanes is so expensive.

    Would I buy one? If it costs less than $150,000 I would try to partner with two other guys and get one just to go up to New Hampshire for lunch in the summer.

  2. from a British photographer;

    Credit Crunch joke:

    “What’s the capital of
    Iceland?

    About £3.50.”

    From a photo.net thread about jokes:

    “If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1000. With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left. If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left. If you had purchased United Airlines, you would have nothing left. But, if you had purchased $1000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, and then turned in the cans for recycling, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. This is called the 401-Keg Plan. “

  3. Start numbers.. Finickity details: You’d still have $50 left if you had invested in UAUA (united airlines). Not a lot, but not 0.

    But the can part seemed way off to me: Recycled cans are worth around $1.15/kg. At 72 cans/kg, and $5.60/six pack of Buds, that $1000 bought 1066 cans (Battle of Hastings!) or 14.80kg of empties = $17 in your pocket.

    Worse that UAL, though you didn’t get to drink as they went down 🙂

    If you were drinking European beer (where cans are usually a 55:45 Steel/Alu alloy), it’s worse than Worldcom 🙂
