  1. Hi, Philip, that was neat to see you. Interesting how the green lasers are so much brighter. What a sad thing though, especially considering the alarming frequency of pilots being “lasered.”

  2. I’ve always wondered, how to they dig up people who are the “local expert” on these stories? Did they just start calling flight instructors? Are you buddies with the station manager? Does Rupert Murdoch fly out of Hanscom when he visits Boston?

  3. it is really scary how frequent those laser attacks are.u were great. how cd they ever find who did it??do u think people do it ON PURPOSE???? how weird.

  4. Josh: They got the audio from liveatc.net (fantastic site) and asked the founder, Dave Pascoe, to be on the air. He recommended me instead, due to (1) ATP certificate, (2) experience flying airliners, and (3) experience operating in and out of Logan.

Elsa: Glad you liked the segment. In a few cases they have apprehended the perpetrator, but mostly when the aircraft in question was a police helicopter. I’m sure that people are doing it on purpose, but maybe not to be malicious. There aren’t that many objects in the sky and perhaps the laser pointer owners can’t resist trying to track aircraft.

  5. Sea-Tac here in Washington has been having (what seems to me to be) a higher than normal number of these laser issues recently. They caught at least one of the guys. But I think it’s a low-percentage thing. Got to be hard to figure out exactly where something like that is coming from.

  6. This is right out of Tom Clancy novel — he uses a laser to crash an airliner by blinding the pilots on short final. It’s not that far fetched. I’m surprised to learn there are so many of these incidents. Maybe they should put a warning in the laser pointer case — point this at an airplane and go to jail for a long time, you idiot.
