Good used car in Washington, D.C.?

A friend in Bethesda, Maryland (Washington, D.C. suburb) needs to buy a car for her nanny. Mission: transport 2-year-old kid and sometimes big dog for a total of 7500 miles per year. Being fashionable is not important, though the car should be reasonably reliable and safe.

I thought that a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu from a rental car agency would be a good choice. Or maybe a Chrysler minivan with 50,000 miles on it.

Ideas? Where to get a good value used car in the DC/Maryland area?

  1. What about the Federal government? They must have auctions where they sell off cars that the FBI, GSA, etc. doesn’t need anymore.

  2. I’ve always had good luck with CarMax. I don’t care for the pushy salespeople in the Rockville location, though. Tell her to go to the Laurel location instead.

  3. For low hassle shopping 2-3 year old just off lease used cars can be a good deal. Warranties are available. The higher end cars allegedly get a good looking over with new brakes regardless of need and such before going to market.

  4. I suggest the used car lot of any of the DC dealers on the list of 798 that Chrysler wants to terminate agreements with. My father just bought a car from one of them, 25% below the “red-tag special” price with a minimum of effort, and below trade-in value, according to Edmunds. I suspect they are preparing for the worst and liquidating inventory.
