  1. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a case.

Alexandria was sort of like New York in the Roman Empire. It had a much larger Jewish population than historical Israel and Juda proper, specially after the diaspora. There were also nasty racial tensions between the Greek and Jewish communities there…

  2. Was President Obama’s speech a step in the right direction or not?
No one is perfect, you can’t get everything you want, right here in America Japanese Americans aren’t getting their stuff back from when we confiscated it during World War Two….so only two reactions to the article (or three, maybe)
    1. you’re right, Obama should have called out Egypt amongst the other fuck ups he dumped on
    2. Get over it, it’s fifty years later, Egyptians are his hosts, when you’re a guest in someone’s house you can’t call them names, it’s not polite, it’s not right, and you lose any impact from the comment of your message when you do that because it’s so rude

    I choose #2.

Egypt is what passes for moderate in the Middle East, so take a deep knee bend and calm down about the government taking your stuff. For the first time since Harry Truman we have a leader willing to call Israel on their mistake, and you won’t get any progress from the rest of the Arab world until you have some balance…Jews have been persecuted maybe more than any other group, it’s
not okay, not ever….realize there are real political grown up reasons for not saying everything there is to say, and take this as a step towards hope and reconciliation, towards the good in all of us, towards a future world we can all be proud of where all of us, black and white and Jewish and Arab and Muslim and not, Christian and not, can all hold hands and find the courage to say: hello. Good morning.

In other words Anne Frank wrote: “Despite everything that’s happened I still believe people are good at heart.” You have less reason to doubt that than her, so get over it.

  3. For the first time since Harry Truman we have a leader willing to call Israel on their mistake,

Which mistake would that be? Existing?

  4. Stephen: That would seem to be the main problem anyone has with Israel.

I think eric is talking about calling Israel out about their settlements.

I personally think they(Israel) have bigger fish to worry about when they have countries calling for them to be wiped from the face of the map. And that’s being said from countries that actually could do it.
