When does a drug qualify as a painkiller?

I asked a woman recovering from surgery whether she was being given any painkillers. She replied that she was on ibuprofen. I said “That’s not a painkiller.” She demanded to know why not. I thought for a moment and then said “If Michael Jackson wasn’t taking it, it isn’t a painkiller.”
