Here’s an interesting article on a self-paced online college education, offered at a flat $99 per month (i.e., an extremely energetic person could earn a bachelor’s degree in one month for $99).

It actually looks like you can earn college credit but not a degree. But it would be a way to get some college credits completed in an inexpensive fashion before transferring to an accredited college to complete a degree.
Actually, more interesting is http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/05/your-money/paying-for-college/05money.html
“THREE YEARS Perhaps the biggest cost-saving measure for private colleges like Lafayette would be to allow students to pay the same price per year but graduate in three years instead of four. Hartwick College in New York is already trying this; 13 students have signed on this fall.”

One of the quotes is funny:
““Three-year degrees are a very important option, and I think we’ll be seeing more of them,” she said. “They won’t serve a large proportion of students since a three-year degree requires that you finish high school college-ready, enroll full-time and be focused.””
Be focused? Imagine that.
I wonder how long it’s going to be before the accreditation process starts to change. Schools like Western Governor’s already use a system like this that ends up in a California (and several other states) teaching certificate.
I assume the old guard colleges will hang on to their protectionist ways for as long as they possibly can, but at some point the competition will catch up with them.
