Judging a (mostly) macro photography contest for boston.com

The editors of boston.com asked me to judge a photo contest involving nearly 200 mostly macro images. My thoughts are posted in two places:

Let me know what I should have chosen and what I should have said!

  1. Philip,

I was browsing through your comments and recognized immediately the sixth place finisher. It’s the screen saver built into Apple OS X.

Enjoyed your comments and the photos.

    Regards,
    T.J.

  2. TJ: Thanks. I guess I have never seen a modern Mac in screensaver mode or perhaps I haven’t looked carefully. That’s one good thing about photography. It forces us to look carefully at things.

  3. 2nd place photo reminds of Chinese homemade light chicken soup in which drops of fat on the surface effortlessly combine and disperse into many sizes of drops.

  4. #3 – I love how the photographer’s face, hands and camera are clearly visible – alright, clearly visible may be a slight overstatement – yet it’s entirely unclear as to what is causing the drops of water (greek chorus) effect in the foreground.
