Best place to find a freelance illustrator/graphic designer?

Folks: I’d like to hire a freelance illustrator/graphic designer for a variety of personal projects, e.g., a party invitation composited out of some photos. What’s a good marketplace to find someone? From 10 years ago, I remember elance.com being useful. A Google search brings up guru.com as well.

  1. I’ve used Jade Magnet (www.jademagnet.com) and been happy with the results (the video on my website, for example). They have a crowd-source option but I recommend their ‘valet’ service where you brief them, and they, in turn, brief someone whom they believe will address your requirement best. Let me know if you want an intro to the founders – they’re pretty friendly & helpful.

  2. This will be interesting & I hope you will post some of your design-project results, since your own design taste & expression have been distinctive over the years. From a near perspective, I am a designer & have a project upcoming in developing a communication design RFP & designer selections.

As I look at each of the links above “about” designers, I see something i am not so keen on seeing – lots of icons. I find that the work of designers tends to be as signature as a thumb-print & icons are so generic. And, unfortunately, so are sincere “nice guy” attitudes from aspiring designers.

So I tried searching “graphic design portfolios” & there you start to get a look at some of the differences between the works of designers – the differences in look-feel-impact & hence inherent message of any design piece.

  3. I added Boston to the search above & thought this result was promising:

    – demonstrated propensity for using photos edge to edge
    – understands photo edges & edge-affinities
    – exceptionally fresh use of color
    – exceptionally fresh use of color & space
    – understands direct communication
    – some excellent text design in portfolio

In addition to the designer’s fresh website as it might predict small graphic design work, I thought this website-page layout from the portfolio shows the values above:
