At the convenience store today, the checkout clerk complimented a youngster on his Star Wars T-shirt. “Those were the best movies,” noted the recent graduate of a suburban Massachusetts high school, “but you really should read some of the books. I never read. Never. But there are two books that follow Episode 6 and they are awesome. Much better than George Lucas’s screenplays. They’re really worth the time.”

If he’s referring to Zahn’s first trilogy then I agree – much better than the movies and as a 12 year old I loved them and couldn’t wait for each one to come out! I imagine the Star Wars book franchise has become a production line in recent years, but Zahn did a surprisingly good job as the first.
It’s good advice though. Get someone started on Zahn and maybe soon they’ll be reading Asimov, Heinlein, Dick and Ellison.
Agreed. I can tell you where I was when every book in Zahn’s trilogy and David Feintuch’s Seafort series came out. I glanced at them again recently and figured they would seem silly and childish now, but they don’t. Brian Daley’s Han Solo stories are great reading as well.
What are these books called?
Alan: Should be easy to find the books. Just go into any library and ask the reference librarian “What are the two greatest novels published within the last 100 years?”
