Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Movie recommendation: Jiro Dreams of Sushi. This movie encapsulates almost everything that I admire about the Japanese people: the skill and dedication to craft, the filial devotion, the respect for tradition, the work ethic, the politeness to customers, etc. If you want to inspire your kid to work harder and/or become a vegetarian, perhaps a good parent-child experience as well.

  1. Phil,
Not much time in Japan, but I’ve been to South Korea many times for weeks at a time. I love the country and its people. I’m 63, and I’ve never felt so safe walking the streets of a big city in the middle of the night (time twisted w/12hr jetlag). If you get a chance, don’t miss it.

  2. I should move to Japan. Whenever I worked hard or showed dedication to a subject, coworkers just called me a nerd and told me to get a life. Can’t say management appreciated the effort, but I also can’t say their companies are doing well these days…
The Japanese definitely have a lot to teach us about performing excellent work and also appreciating it.

  3. The trailer (via your link at IMDB) indeed looked interesting, and who would have thought that the Mozart music would have been so appropriate?

Could you comment, though, on why seeing the movie will inspire vegetarianism?

  4. I loved the movie and I agree with your general comments about Japan, where I have traveled many times. Nonetheless Jiro’s politeness doesn’t seem to extend to “gaijin”. I had a friend who lives in Tokyo and speaks basic Japanese call for a reservation on my behalf and they were very rude to him. When he asked when they had availability they replied “never”. Shouldn’t genuine politeness apply to everyone, even foreigners?
