DxoMark has tested the new Nikon D810 and it has even better dynamic range than the D800. The ability to hold detail simultaneously in highlights and shadows is the main limitation of digital cameras (compared to film) and Canon continues to stagnate while Nikon and Sony pull ahead. Check out this comparison on DxOMark of Nikon, Sony, and Canon.

Even Leica, despite having a R&D budget probably smaller than Canon R&D’s cafeteria budget.
Has Canon given up? They seem to be missing the mirrorless boat as well.
I’ve been a Canon guy since the mid-90s, but bought a D810 to see how I liked it… It’s solidly all-around better than the 5D Mark III, but the dynamic range is really what sold me (especially since I’m in to night photography). Check out the D810’s ability to recover shadows, vs the 5D3’s: https://twitter.com/tonynorthrup/statuses/494457353648209920.
Owning both, I can’t think of a scenario where I’d pick up the 5D3.
