It turns out that the Sony DSC-RX100 III is a significant upgrade from the first version of this camera. Here are the big new features:
- 24mm wide angle instead of 28mm
- pop-up/out eyelevel viewfinder for use in bright sun
- articulating rear LCD (great for tall old people taking pictures of short young people)
Battery capacity was barely dented over 1.5 days and 227 images plus two short videos captured.
Example photos: on Google+ (from a baby shower, a crazy dark and contrasty charity auction for AANE, and a helicopter flight; nearly all using the green idiot mode or yellow double super idiot mode)
I’ve been reading your stuff for a long time — all the way back to when you were ranting about “dickless yuppies” and recommending the Yashica T4 as a credible P&S. I bought that camera (my first) on your good advice. I may need to check out the new Sony.
Most appealing is the much brighter lens allowing for lower iso’s in less than perfect light. The large sensor coupled with the bright lens means that interchangeable lens cameras can be replaced by a pocket camera for most purposes.
After reading some of the reviews last night, it seems the lens is only brighter than the previous version in the longer focal lengths.
I’m very happy with my upgrade: the RX1. Full-frame, easy controls, f/2 throughout the entire zoom range, DXO scores of 93/25/14/2500 versus the RX100 III’s scores of 67/22/12/500. The only drawback is the zoom range is a rather narrow 35mm-35mm.
For travel, would you choose the RX100 III or the A6000.
