Crony Capitalist Stoners in Massachusetts

“Mass. has Banked Over $3M in Dispensary Fees & Not a Single Marijuana Seed Has Been Planted” and “The First Medical Marijuana Dispensary in Mass. Will Open Today” suggest that the new industry of legalized marijuana in Massachusetts is going to be dominated by crony capitalists. It looks as though virtually anyone in the state would qualify for medical marijuana (list of qualifying conditions) since PTSD is on the list (“I can’t recover from the trauma of not being to purchase marijuana legally.”) as well as “chronic pain.” I’ll be interested to see (assuming that glaucoma does not prevent me from seeing) if the prices are much higher than in California and Colorado.

  1. In Pennsylvania, 80 years after the repeal of Prohibition, we still have state owned liquor stores, and beer is sold by crony capitalist “Beer Distributors” who own the state legislature along with the car dealers. When I went to China, it was far less “Communist” than Pennsylvania regarding liquor sales (and many other things).
The dynamic here is like the story of the family who complained that their little house was too small. Their rabbi told them to move all their goats and chickens and the cow into the house, and then when they moved some of them back out again the house felt spacious. First the government takes away our right to smoke hemp or drink alcohol, etc. and then later it gives it back and we are supposed to feel thankful. But it keeps a nice profitable piece for itself and its buddies – the status quo ante is never restored, not even 80 years later.
