The only reason that Danny Lewin is not a household name as a hero is because so little is known of what happened on Flight 11. Those who knew him have no doubt that he would have tried to stop the hijacking.
Everyone on that flight was doomed but they didn’t know it. Until that moment, hijackings were usually of the “take me to Havana” type. Most of the people on the plane would have figured that we’ll sit on the tarmac for a few hours and there will be some kind of hostage exchange and then we’ll all get to go home (or most will). Whether or not Danny sensed that this was not the usual situation, his nature would not have allowed him to just sit on his butt. At least he died like a man.
