Rescue of a Robinson R22 pilot from the Arctic ice

Just when you think that nothing worse can happen in a Robinson R22 than flying with a student… “Marooned Among the Polar Bears” chronicles a 50-year-old Russian pilot’s rescue following an autorotation through IMC into the Arctic Ocean.

  1. I have to wonder why this pilot wasn’t wearing a survival vest, such as the military uses.

I know USAF helicopter crews wear a vest with water wings, ELT, Spare Air, a mirror, etc.

  2. If he was falling at a rate of 17 feet per second, from a height of 3000 feet, he had three minutes to get his act together (e.g. hit the panic button, etc.) unless he had to grip the stick with both hands all the down. I know nothing about helicopters.
