Folks:
I leave today for Paris. Would any French readers like to get together on Saturday morning, July 23? Or perhaps on Thursday or Friday of this week? If so, please email me (philg@mit.edu). Happy to chat about any of the subjects that I’ve written about, e.g., technology, travel, photography, and economics.
Mom and I are going to be on a Royal Caribbean cruise. I should be available to meet up at the following times:
- July 26, 4 pm: Helsinki
- July 30, 1 pm: Talinn
- July 31: 3 pm: Riga
- August 1: any time 11-6, Klaipeda (Lithuania)
- August 3, morning or evening: Rostock (Germany)
- August 4: 10a-4p, Fredericia (Denmark)
- August 5-6, flexible: Copenhagen
Thanks in advance for making the effort!
I’m nowhere near any of your spots on said dates, but, as you apparently will be getting aboard the Royal Caribbean in Helsinki, arrange with the taxi driver from the airport to first stop by for a short visit in the Temppeliaukio Church – it’s only 2.5km from the central harbor where most of the Baltic ships (though perhaps not yours) tie up.
I realize that (even ascetic Lutheran) churches may not be your cup of sightseeing, but hear this from a die-hard Atheist: architecturally, there’s nothing like that in the entire world… a cave that’s essentially been hollowed out of a rocky knoll surrounded by apartment buildings in central Helsinki. If you don’t know it’s there, you might miss it entirely.
It has an incredible ambience inside, if only “sampled” for a brief moment (I visited it the first time one winter without having seen many pictures of it in advance, and felt like I was entering the rebel base on Tatooine). Lots of diminutive Japanese visitors. Amazing accoustics (clap your hands to hear the echo then frown down the attendant). If your’re lucky, you’ll see people walking dogs, LABS even! on its grassy roof; or sunbathing. I’d walk back to the harbor through central shopping district – follow the tram line – which begins maybe 4-5 blocks later along that route. You won’t be sorry: this is as close to utilitarian living art as you’ll ever likely experience, so don’t miss it.
