Unusual hazard to a helicopter: being hit by a car

“Helicopter struck by suspected drunk driver near Gallup” describes a good day for Airbus (formerly “Eurocopter”) and a bad one for everyone else. It looks as though an Astar medevac helicopter got tangled up in a secondary accident. Not sure if this can compensate for the slowdown in the offshore oil rig transportation market, but at least someone in the parts sales department is going to be busy.

  1. Parts are only a portion of the cost. That “bird” is goIng to be arriving at a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility via flat bed truck and spending quite some time there. Think complete disassembly, structural analysis of the frame requiring NDI, finite element analysis, development of custom repairs, installing specially manufactured repair parts via precision jigs, etc., etc.
