The world of plastic airplanes will need to study Mandarin. A Chinese company has purchased most of Diamond Canada, makers of spectacular-handling light airplanes such as the Diamond Star DA40. In other news, Chinese money has finally pushed the Cirrus Jet out the door (first delivery), five years after Cirrus was purchased by China Aviation Industry General Aircraft.

Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Benjamin: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Benjamin: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Plastics.
Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean?
Economists like Krugman have for decades blindly preached that trade deficits with China are ok because they will eventually balance out when China buys our goods. Instead China is now quickly buying up the West’s companies (especially in Germany). While our politicians tell us us this can’t be stopped because it would be “protectionist”, China’s govt blocks foreigners from buying Chinese companies, stocks, and real estate. Can The Donald fix this before we all end up working for Chinese companies?
On an upbeat note, maybe Diamond will finally deliver a big, safe, comfortable diesel DA50.
The diamond buy would not be a good example of China’s buying the west’s useful businesses. After the GA hype in China fueled by government and real estate money, the bubble will burst and they will learn in a hard way that GA really isn’t practical (unless 30 years from now pilot-less electric planes/multicopters become more mature.)
