Encouraging a 10-year-old

Conversation between a(n immigrant) friend and a 10-year-old child:

  • I don’t want to go to the fencing competition! I am always the youngest and the smallest! I have no chance!!!
  • I know you can do it. Just focus and do your best! I believe in you!
  • Papa, you are now trying to talk like Americans do: “You can do it! You are amazing! You can totally win!” This sucks and is not going to work on me. Please be yourself.

  1. Competing against players who are bigger and better than you will make you a better fencer even if you lose.

  2. Daddy: ‘whack the opponent on the head and lose a point’
    Spawn: ‘WTF?’
    Daddy: ‘Just do it’
(Spawn wins the bout against larger opponent).

Please teach your kids to play hard and cheat.

  3. I agree with Neal although it’s hard for a 10 years old kid to focus totally on learning and not on winning.

  4. Convincing a 10 year old of anything isn’t easy. I wish your friend luck!

Thrilled to know about Shaq. I will go to YouTube for some videos right now… 😉

  5. toucan for the win! whocuddaknown Shaq is a fencer (assuming we are writing of LSU/NBA Shaq and not some effete fencing-Shaq.

  6. Being tall (especially having long arms) is generally an advantage in fencing (especially in foil where only body hits count) in that you can reach the other fencer’s body before he can reach yours. It’s an advantage that can be overcome, but all other things being equal it’s an advantage.
