My Facebook friends are squawking with outrage about the Trumpenfuhrer’s pardon of Jerry Arpaio.
“Pam and PETA in Love With Joe Arpaio, Arizona’s Anti-Immigrant Sheriff” (Jezebel, 2015) concerns the retired sheriff’s introduction of vegetarian cuisine in an Arizona jail.
The 85-year-old Arpaio was apparently a pioneer on an issue that has been in the news lately, i.e., protecting women in the workplace: “He also banned inmates from possessing “sexually explicit material” including Playboy magazine, after female officers complained” (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio )
I’m glad he was pardoned. Otherwise he would have been a political prisoner.
Is this posting intended to imply that your Facebook friends are being hypocritical because in addition to ignoring the ruling of a Federal judge and allegedly violating the rights of Americans and mistreating his prisoners Sheriff Arpaio also did a few (minor) things which your Facebook friends might agree with?
Joe Arpaio is a bully and a bigot and a crook just like Trump. Tons of people were arrested falsely and charged with crimes and beaten and bullied and even a few killed for no reasons. He learned on the job how to ignore judges of all persuasions and abuse his power by having the judges and their families who were investigating him followed and investigated to try to influence the judges rulings. So Sheriff Joe was absolutely guilty of serious crimes and abuse of power. Pardoning him will create back lash in the federal judicial system for years if not decades. Judges no longer can feel independent from law enforcement attacking them.
So Anon you are so wrong. The conviction of Joe was NOT a political adventure.

Bill: You make it sound as though, despite his promotion of vegetarianism and safety for women in the workplace, Mr. Arpaio was guilty of serious crimes. Why then was he only being pursued on a misdemeanor charge and facing a maximum of six months in jail? A garden-variety criminal in the U.S., if convicted, is faced with decades of imprisonment (see http://philip.greenspun.com/blog/2013/01/15/plea-bargaining-and-torture-in-light-of-the-aaron-swartz-case/ )
[I wasn’t on the scene in Arizona nor in any courtroom so I don’t have an opinion as to whether or not Mr. Arpaio is guilty of anything.]
Since “you weren’t on the scene” I guess you don’t “have an opinion” as to whether Hitler, Stalin, or John Gotti were guilty of anything either.
Bill,
I’m sure you’d get convicted (and probably more than six months) if a dedicated team of U.S. Government agencies went after you too!
ZZAZZ: How can Arpaio be the neo-Hitler if Donald Trump already occupies that position? Are you saying that, with world and U.S. population having grown so much between the 1930s and the present, we have two Hitlers today and they are both in the U.S.?

Could be that his victims were mostly from minority groups and this is evidence that at least some minorities still don’t get equal protection under the law.
Hitler was also a vegetarian and animal lover!
Wow, what a spectacular failure to take the point.
Don’t feed the troll even if he (assuming philg is still identifying as male) is the host.
Just following the money, Arpaio is a liability:
“What finally got Arpaio in legal trouble – illegally targeting Latinos – was actually the least of his crimes, only because racially profiling minorities is the default setting for most law enforcement. That battle alone cost over $44m in court fees. Add that to the more than $50m in legal settlements (as of 2008) that Maricopa County taxpayers had to pay out to victims of Arpaio’s regime, and you have a bigger money pit than Trump’s Atlantic City casino.”

The Controversies section in Wikipedia is enormous compared to the remainder of his entry:

In 2004, he orchestrated the arrest of two reporters who had been digging into his financial records to ascertain where his wealth came from:
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors this afternoon voted unanimously to approve a $3.75 million settlement for New Times’ co-founders, whose false arrests in 2007 were orchestrated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were taken from their homes in the middle of the night and jailed on misdemeanor charges alleging that they violated the secrecy of a grand jury — which turned out never to have been convened.
Al Capone was convicted for tax evasion; does that mean his conspiracies to commit murder were not real?
