Hand-spun milkshakes at Five Guys

Why I love Corporate America #472: A sign outside our local Five Guys proclaims “hand-spun milkshakes.”

We walked in and found… an apparently conventional milkshake machine. We asked one of the crew what it all meant. “It’s exactly the same as a milkshake at McDonald’s,” he explained.

  1. I believe many fast foodies use pre-mixed shakes. McDonald’s does not use them. I assume that’s the reference the Five Guys worker was making. Although he used a poor choice of words.

  2. I means a human “hand” must turn on the machine so the milkshake can be “spun” by it.

  3. “What job do people hire a milkshake to do?” A surprisingly insightful answer to question comes from Clayton Christensen.

  4. Didn’t Ray Kroc first meet the McDonald brothers when trying to sell them milkshake machines? I wonder if they were considered hand-spun.

Far be it from me to impugn the knowledge of a fast-food crew member, but he doesn’t know what he is talking about. The next time you go to McDonald’s you won’t see a “conventional milkshake machine”. That’s because McDonald’s doesn’t sell milkshakes.
