Is the New York Times the primary promoter of white replacement theory?

“White Replacement Theory” is in the news as a potential motivation for the recent mass murder in Buffalo. After a decent interval to mourn the victims, perhaps it is worth asking “Who could be responsible for spreading this false narrative?”

“It Was a Terrifying Census for White Nationalists” (New York Times, August 2021):

The white power acolytes saw this train approaching from a distance — the browning of America, the shrinking of the white population and the explosion of the nonwhite — and they did everything they could to head it off.

They tried to clamp down on immigration, both unlawful and lawful. They waged a propaganda war against abortion, and they lobbied for “traditional family values” in the hopes of persuading more white women to have more babies. They orchestrated a system of mass incarceration that siphoned millions of young, marriage-age men, disproportionately Black and Hispanic, out of the free population.

On every level, in every way, these forces, whether wittingly or not, worked to prevent the nonwhite population from growing. And yet it did.

Meanwhile, the white population, in absolute numbers, declined for the first time in the history of the country.

“What the ‘Majority Minority’ Shift Really Means for America” (NYT, August 2021):

In 2015, the Census Bureau published a report projecting that by 2044, the United States’ white majority would become merely a white plurality: immigration and fertility trends would lead to America’s ethnic and racial minorities outnumbering its white population.

Because of the status white people retain in American society, a degree of privilege and belonging still awaits those who can claim it. People who identify as white hold disproportionate power and resources today, and this pernicious reality seems unlikely to change even if white people do become a 49 percent plurality in about two decades.

“Fewer Births Than Deaths Among Whites in Majority of U.S. States” (NYT, June 2018):

Deaths now outnumber births among white people in more than half the states in the country, demographers have found, signaling what could be a faster-than-expected transition to a future in which whites are no longer a majority of the American population.

The Census Bureau has projected that whites could drop below 50 percent of the population around 2045, a relatively slow-moving change that has been years in the making. But a new report this week found that whites are dying faster than they are being born now in 26 states, up from 17 just two years earlier, and demographers say that shift might come even sooner.

“Why the Announcement of a Looming White Minority Makes Demographers Nervous” (November 2018):

For white nationalists, it signifies a kind of doomsday clock counting down to the end of racial and cultural dominance. For progressives who seek an end to Republican power, the year points to inevitable political triumph, when they imagine voters of color will rise up and hand victories to the Democratic Party.

Of course, the mass shooting was a terrible event and directed against non-elites who had no role in creating our open borders nor the economic policies that have reduced fertility among working class whites. (chart source)

(According to the chart, the best times to have kids are when you’re on welfare and when you’re rich. Note that there are a lot more poor people than rich people and, therefore, the United States is becoming increasingly a society of the children of the poor. See The Son Also Rises: economics history with everyday applications and The Son Also Rises: Policy Implications for what that might mean.)

The New York Times blames “far-right online platforms” for spreading this “racist belief” (5/14/2022):

The idea that white people should fear being replaced by “others” has spread through far-right online platforms, shaping discussions among American white nationalists, The Times has reported.

Should the paper look at its own triumphalist articles?

Circling back to the tragedy in Buffalo, are there any lessons to be learned? Republicans are often blamed for insufficiently restrictive gun laws, but New York State is free of political influence by Republicans. The perpetrator was mentally ill, but we don’t have effective treatments for mental illness. Two years of school lockdowns and mask orders probably did not improve his mental condition (he reportedly wore a hazmat suit to school for a week). Maybe he would have been happier if his parents had moved him to Florida. I see a fair number of mixed-skin-color teenage voluntary gatherings. Black guys in their 20s and 30s here generally refer to me as “brother”. I have not determined whether it is acceptable to reciprocate.

  1. That’s what you get when government squeezes middle class of responsible, working people to feed the unskilled and irresponsible (abd also ever proliferating “elite” of kleptocrats). With all these idiotic child “safety” laws requiring 24/7 supervision of childern and ever increasing costs of daycare, schooling, and medicine the repsonsible people ofen find they cannot afford children. The irresponsible simply ignore the laws and neglect the children – so they grow into members of the perpetual underclass. It’s pure dysgenic nature of socialism.

    • What is irresponsible is to leave children wards of lowest-bid employees of heavily regulated day care. And no low-income family child is left without medical financing in this country. People are making choices to extend fun into their 40th and 50th, meaning spending evenings drinking at bars and days working hard at jobs like facilitating outsourcing and confirming to more regulations, and the voting for “sophisticated” kind of politicians no matter what they do. Thanks to Philip for reading NYT so we would not have to but NYT is just a symptom.

    • This disgusting mass murderer never thought to start large family of his own, just go and destroy someone else. Judging by what is reported about him, if he did not do what he did he would likely became senior manager who optimizes his bonus by outsourcing work to the cheapest bidder.

  2. The Guardian is milking the unfortunate event. This article identifies Tucker Carlson as the responsible person (surprise!), while linking anyone who opposes CRT to Nazism and antisemitism:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/may/15/buffalo-shooting-white-replacement-theory-inspires-mass

But what Carlson has been doing is spending an entire year repeating a conspiracy by Christopher Rufo that says that American education has been infected by a pro-Black ideology (CRT) that was created by German Jewish Marxist intellectuals (the Frankfurt School).

Some American Jews hope that by identifying as white, and lending their support to racist narratives about IQ and crime, they can diminish rightwing American antisemitism.

This sort of drivel is astonishing even by Guardian standards.

  3. From what I’ve read he was also motivated by a powerful antisemitic hatred. There’s no doubt that we’ve got White Supremacists and closeted (and not so closeted) Nazis in the United States. I can tell stories about my home town in New Jersey, where some old John Birchers and more extreme people who were hanger-on survivors and apologists for the Third Reich used to hang out in a bar very close to the center of town. They were very much in the minority, to be sure – but scratch the surface and they were there.

The interesting thing to me is that the New York Times seems to delight in the *realities* of what some would attribute to “replacement” but then blame it on the people who reach that conclusion also, either on their own or because they read it in the New York Times. It’s like they’re saying: “Oh, yes it’s great that it’s happening! Of course that’s just one of the consequences of our Progressive politics in America, and something we’re actively working toward. Except if you call it that, you’re a Thought Criminal!”

It seems to matter whose side you’re on! If you’re a Progressive who enjoys reading the New York Times’ exposition of demographic shift (just don’t call it Replacement), that’s perfectly fine! But if you COMPLAIN about it, well, you’re a racist scumbag, because obviously, it’s just something you’re going to have to accept, because they are correct. It’s an interesting paradox of their editorial prerogatives.

As for the lunatics who shoot people like this guy in Buffalo did, they’re tremendous dead-enders. All they ever succeed in doing is making their own problems much worse.

    • Addendum: And the thing that always really makes me wish I was there to put a round in that guy’s head and stop him myself is that these losers always choose the soft targets of completely innocent people who don’t have any idea or culpability in what they’re so terribly disturbed about. They’re psychopaths and sociopaths. I wish I’d been there and had a clear shot.

    • In European mainstream society, if you even mention that mathematically the demographic group with the higher reproduction rate will eventually overtake the others, you are a racist. The NYT articles are pretty daring.

    • @Anonymous: Well, the New York Times prides itself on being “All the News That’s Fit to Print” and as they have lurched to the Left in the past ten years I think they’ve considered themselves to be in the vanguard! It would be hilarious to reprint a few dozen copies of the articles philg links to, walk around outside NYT HQ and ask passerby whether they think the New York Times itself is clear about their role in championing “Replacement.” That would be a fun project for an undergraduate.

    • @Anonymous: I should also add that any undergraduate who studies Political Science would, in the course of their studies, find other examples of “Demographic Shift” that were not just supported passively but actually sponsored by various tribes of Elites for their own reasons – if they had the temerity to read history and learn from it. Some of those undergraduates would agree with it as a general practice and some would ask various questions about who is really benefiting from it? The real failure of the media – both in this country and apparently in Europe as well – is that they just don’t want to level with their own people.

The Western World has very little tolerance for the second group of undergraduates because – once you spend a few more years learning where the money really goes – you run right into the entrenched interests of the criminals Running the Show.
