Judaism requires us to fight against the Second Amendment

We get this in our mail addressed to “current resident”:

(The previous owners of this house belonged to a Reform synagogue. A computer made the assumption that the new owners were likely also interested in matters Jewish?)

The front page “No More Silence” article chronicles a female rabbi (i.e., “not a rabbi” as far as Jews who practice Judaism are concerned) leading an epic 6-hour drive from Palm Beach County to Tallahassee to demonstrate against Florida’s latest gun laws, which the author claims will allow new classes of people to buy guns “with no checks on them whatsoever” and then “legally carry that loaded weapon anywhere they chose.”

The anti-gunners who are, no doubt, concerned about climate change, piled into a pavement-melting SUV for the 12-hour round-trip.

I’m wondering how being against private gun ownership came to be accepted as an obvious requirement of Judaism. Particularly in Florida, where the corporate media assures us that we have devolved into fascism, you’d think that Jews would want to arm themselves as protection against Ron DeSantis’s Braunhemden (see, for example, “Lawmakers, Jewish Groups Call on Florida Gov. to Denounce Neo-Nazis Waving ‘DeSantis Country’ Flags” (Journal of Popular Studies, July 2022) and “Fascism’s History Offers Lessons about Today’s Attacks on Education” (Scientific American, April 2023): “highlighting the parallels between the ambitions of DeSantis and those of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini exposes the shared threat to democracy”).

  1. On one of your trips to Israel I am sure you noticed all of the teenagers walking around with machine guns!

  2. Lately faux religious feelings can be hardly separated from politics and the state. Looks like the rabbi’s synagogue’s non-profit tax status should be cancelled. Donations to Democrats are not yet tax deductible and will remain so for at least 2 years. Interesting that Jewish Bible states that Jews left Egypt organized in legions and carrying swords. Perhaps that rabbi represents her own synagogue, because all Jewish denominations, including Reform and Conservative who do ordain female rabbis, are preaching same Jewish Bible that does not really support arms control.

  3. At a Jewish wedding in NYC a couple of years ago, I was shocked when I saw a female rabbi officiated the ceremony. I did not realize theretofore that such existed.

The groom’s father, my friend, explained to me that the original plan was to fly in a male Conservative rabbi from MA, but the bride put the kibosh on that due to some ritual words she would have been obligated to utter, the words she considered misogynistic, had the Conservative rabbi been in charge. Hence a female Reform replacement who did not care much about such formalities.

  4. There is not such thing in Mexico as the second amendment regardless of religion, although criminals carry weapons more powerful than cops in the USA. A controversial politician in the US&A once said that he occasionally carried a gun legally. And, if all adult people could do that, criminals would think twice before attacking them. In Mexico, most criminals own powerful guns. Most people don’t and cannot even shoot a minority who knocks their door like in the US&A. Women, specially in CDMX are victims of robbery and sexual abuse every day in public transportation. If they could carry a .22 caliber gun, they could defend themselves. Only occasionally, a vigilante soldier or police without uniform can defend them.

  5. All the synagogues seem to be like this now. Even in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Conservative congregation was organizing a group trip to a trans parade. Rabbis aren’t supposed to be female. Ever. I suspect that in order to find what I considered Reform Judaism growing up, I’m going to have to go Orthodox. They generally don’t have any problem with the Second Amendment.

  6. You’re confused Phil. These are not Jews but an offshoot of Judaism known as Azajews — you know, Azajew I can say that if Ron DeSantis becomes president he will lead us to a something much worse that the Third Reich. Under the Nuremburg Laws these people were once considered Jews but in fact this categorization is erroneous since rather than following the practices and belief systems of Judaism they follow the dictates of the Democrat Party, a belief system they term “Tikun Olam.” Tikun Olam is a rigorous belief system that demands strict adherence to such beliefs as the fluidity of gender, the morality of abortion on demand, the morality of racial discrimination in college admissions, lots of other things. Those who follow Tikun Olam usually line up behind someone they term a “Rabbi” who is typically LBGTQ etc. Although these people may have names and even facial features one typically associates with Jews, it is clear they are not Jews, but rather Azajews because they are not Zionists, and Zionism is a core tenet of Judaism. So you may hear them say things like Azajew I support the return of something they call “occupied territories” to Iran like was done in Gaza so the Iranians will have a place to launch rockets to kill Jews a/k/a Israelis. No offense, Phil. It is a complicated issue, kind of like Jews for Jesus.

  7. Tikun Olam is actually a cultural appropriation by Democrats of a medieval kabbalist philosopher who agitated for more Hebrew Bible study and live to it standards. Has nothing to do with gun control. There are libertarian-inclined Reform congregations that do not discuss politics even though pressure from the “center” on them to do Democrat bidding increased, and many pro – Bill of Rights conservative congregations who too are coming under societal pressures.

  8. I didn’t know Palm Beach was suffering under a wave of anti-semitic attacks. Are you safe there Phil? Are they sure it isn’t just anti-New Yorker sentiments?

Just came back from a biomedical science conference in Florida. After 20 years I can see there is a wave of ethnic change in the academic community and presenters. It was like roughly 60% asians giving the talks, 20% jewish, 10% WASPs and 10% others. Before it was more dominated by Jews and WASPs.. the asians seem to be taking over the sciences.

  9. According to Wikipedia, “Mexico has extremely restrictive laws regarding gun possession”, and has obviously achieved very good results in combating violent crimes with it. So, the USA does not have to look far away in order to find a good role model in solving gun related crimes.

    • “Tikun Olam” TM (trademark of Dem Party USA) won in Mexico even without Mexican Government realizing it. Soon in the USA? However Mexico seems to have unfair advantage of well armed responsible crime cartels , USA “Tikun Olam” TM lags behind

    • Yeah, it is fun to say things like “Oh, you want Mexican-style gun regulations?” when someone starts talking about gun controls, and then hear them start talking about how the U.S. (with 1/6 people identifying as latin American) is nothing like Mexico.
      (Three cheers for American Exceptionalism!)
